Strengths and shadows
All of us have our strengths and shadows.
Really loved this framework + assessment that Chief of Staff Network launched this week. And the concept applies for all leaders—not just Chiefs of Staff.
The CMO might be a great promoter—or an over-hyper. The CFO might be a risk manager—or a fear-monger. The CRO might be a rainmaker—or a lone wolf. The CHRO might be a process builder—or a policy cop. The CPO might be a visionary—or a shiny object chaser.
Has me thinking in more nuanced ways about all the people I work with. Our strengths and shadows are on a continuum, and they ebb and flow—sometimes from just one meeting to the next. Rather than just being frustrated with someone when their shadow rears their head, I think about what strengths it might relate to and it gives me perspective to connect and appreciate rather than judge.
Also has me doing some self-reflection as a leader: Where are my strengths drifting into shadows? How can I recalibrate to more healthy expressions?
Hope this makes you think like it did for me. Here’s to a bit more awareness, understanding, and better work this week.
