Great managers protect joy
One recurring signal of a great manager I’ve seen play out again and again: Their people feel joy at work.
I know, I know. This feel like a soft, pollyannaish, not real life thing to focus energy on.
We have things to do! We have big goals. We’re behind. AI is taking our jobs!
Yes, the pressure is real. But you know where humans naturally bring an uncanny amount of extra creativity and effort to work? Areas that bring that them joy, where they feel like they are finding flow and doing something they were made to do.
And joy is not just some nice perk. It’s a performance engine. Last week’s HBR article on joy proves this out. In their study, high-joy employees saw 25% higher sales, higher NPS, and higher CSAT. Every 1% of joy correlated to .25% higher annual revenue. “Joy, it turned out, had fingerprints all over the outcomes leaders cared most about.”
So what can we do about this in the midst of a busy week of work?
At your next team meeting or 1:1, ask employees what brings them joy at work. Talk about joy. Look for it. See what makes eyes come alive. Find ways to do more of that.
Not all work is going to be joyful, but try to carve out at least ONE project for every employee that is bringing them joy. Then see what results and employee retention follow. ✨ 🙌
